 What is dementia?

         de-men-tia    noun /dɪˈmɛnʃə/

A syndrome of the mental processes caused by brain disease or injury and marked by memory decline, impaired

judgement and reasoning that affects daily life and activities.

Dementia itself is NOT a disease but a general umbrella term used to describe the loss of cognitive functioning - ex. thinking, remembering and reasoning - to such an extent that it interferes with a person's daily life and activities. There are hundreds of types of dementia.

The most common types of progressive brain diseases and conditions resulting in dementia include:   Alzheimers, Vascular dementia, Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) or Picks disease, Lewy Body, Parkinsons, Huntingtons, Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH), Creutzfeldt-Jacob's, Mixed Dementia, Korsakoff's.  Conditions include brain tumours, metabolic issues, traumatic brain injury, MCI (mild cognitive impairment), etc.
